Find an HSN or SAC code by what you actually sell

The tariff is written in the language of the schedule, not the language of a seller. You sell chappals; the heading says footwear with outer soles of rubber. So this searches on both - type a number and you get the heading, type saree or chappal or courier and you get the headings that cover it, ranked so the closest match is at the top.

It is a hand-compiled shortlist of 320 entries: 245 HSN headings for goods and 75 SAC codes for services, across the categories marketplace sellers deal in. Apparel, electronics, stationery, home furnishing, kitchenware, beauty, jewellery and packing materials on one side; commission, courier, job work, repairs and consulting on the other.

Every result shows the rate we have on file, and every result also tells you to check it. Rates change - the slabs were restructured on 22 September 2025 - and several headings split by sale value or at a longer sub-heading than the one shown. Treat what you find here as the start of a conversation with your accountant rather than the end of one.

How it works

  1. Search the way you think about it. Type the heading number if you know it, or the everyday word if you do not. The ranking puts an exact code first, then codes beginning with it, then a description match, then a loose mention.
  2. Narrow to goods or services. HSN goods and SAC services are separate chips. SAC is what you want for anything you bill rather than ship - marketplace commission, courier, job work, consulting.
  3. Read the note on the result. Some entries carry a condition rather than a flat rate. Accommodation and restaurant headings are the obvious ones, and where that applies the note sits on the result itself instead of a footer.
  4. Confirm it before you use it. Take the heading to the current CBIC rate notification, or to your tax adviser, before it goes on an invoice or a return. The page names the source to check against.

What it handles

  • 320 entries in all - 245 HSN headings and 75 SAC codes
  • Ranked matching rather than a flat filter, so 6109 puts heading 6109 first and tshirt finds it too
  • Everyday search words carried on each entry, so chappal, saree, chai and phone cover land on the right heading
  • Headings shown at four or six digits, which is the level most seller invoices are written at
  • Notes on the entries where the rate turns on a condition rather than on the heading alone
  • The version date of the list and what it is based on printed on the page, not buried
  • Your last eight searches kept in this browser, with a button to clear them

Questions

Can I file a return using a code from here?
Not on this alone. It is a hand-compiled shortlist, not a reproduction of the official schedule, and it has not been reconciled line by line against one. Use it to narrow down the heading, then confirm against the current CBIC rate notification or with your tax adviser.
The rate here differs from the one my accountant gave me. Who is right?
Your accountant. Several headings split by sale value or at a sub-heading longer than the four or six digits shown here, and the rates were restructured in September 2025. Where this list and a professional disagree, this list is the one that is a shortcut.
What is the difference between HSN and SAC?
HSN codes classify goods - the thing that goes in the parcel. SAC codes classify services you bill for, such as marketplace commission, courier, job work or consulting. They sit in the same column on an invoice, which is why the lookup carries both.
My product is not in the list. What now?
Then it falls outside the 320 entries, which aim at common marketplace categories and stop well short of the full tariff. Search a broader word for the material or the category to find the neighbourhood, then go to the official schedule to get to the exact heading.
How many digits does my invoice need?
That depends on your turnover and on the rules as they stand, which is a question for your accountant rather than for us. This list shows headings at four or six digits, so if you need eight, what you find here is the first half of it.
