Compress product photos to fit an upload limit
Uploads fail on file size more often than on anything else. A 12-megapixel phone photo is four to eight megabytes, catalogue sheets and supplier portals often cap an image at a few hundred kilobytes, and the WhatsApp copy everyone falls back on is too small and too soft to list with. What you want is the largest picture that still fits under the line.
Name the limit in kilobytes and each image is encoded at the best quality that still comes in under it - a search for the right quality per photo, not one fixed setting applied to the whole folder. A plain white shirt has little detail and keeps a high quality; a busy printed saree has to be squeezed harder to reach the same number.

How it works
- Add the images. Drop in the folder, or pick the files. Each card shows the current file size, which is usually the moment you find out which photo has been failing the upload.
- Set the limit. The box is in kilobytes and starts at 200KB, which clears most marketplace and catalogue uploads. Anything from 10KB to 20000KB is accepted, so a 2MB cap is 2000.
- Decide the format. JPG is the default and the right answer for photographs. WEBP goes smaller again at the same quality, if whoever receives the file accepts it. Keep the original format is there for when a file has to stay a PNG.
- Cap the width if you need to. The width cap starts at 2000 pixels and is applied before compression. Making the picture smaller is what rescues a stubborn photo when quality alone has run out. Set it to 0 to leave the dimensions alone.
- Export. Each image is compressed only as much as it needs to be. Anything that still will not fit at the lowest quality is named in a message, with its weight, instead of being handed to you to fail at upload.

- The quality is found per image by a search between 0.4 and 0.95, so a simple photo is barely touched and a detailed one is worked harder

Your files stay on your computer
This runs inside your browser tab. The file is read and written on your own device and is never uploaded — not the order PDF, not the customer names and addresses printed on it. There is no upload endpoint to send it to.
Questions
- What limit should I set?
- 200KB is the default because it clears most marketplace and catalogue uploads with room to spare. If you have been given a number, use that one. There is nothing to gain by going below what you were asked for - you only throw away detail you could have kept.
- I set 100KB and one photo came back at 180KB. Why?
- Because even at the lowest quality it would not fit, and quietly handing you a file that fails at upload is worse than telling you. The message names the file. Cap the width - a 2000-pixel photo brought down to 1200 will usually drop under a limit that quality alone could not reach.
- Does compressing the same photo twice make it smaller again?
- A little, and it costs visible quality each time, because JPEG discards detail permanently every time it is written. Always start from the original photo rather than from a copy you compressed last month, and keep the originals somewhere safe.
- Can it compress a PNG without turning it into a JPG?
- It can keep the PNG, but PNG is lossless - there is no quality dial to turn, so the only thing that shrinks it is the width cap, and the target may simply be missed. For a photograph, a high quality JPG is far smaller than any PNG and looks the same.
- Will it change the picture's size in pixels?
- Only when the width cap is above zero and the image is wider than it. With the cap at 2000 a 4000-pixel photo comes back 2000 wide; anything already narrower keeps its own size. Set the cap to 0 and only the encoding changes.
